Will the good times continue to roll...
Good things always come to an end and this appears to be doubly true for sunshine and clear skies. We awoke to haze and light cloud on the horizon that seemed to thicken as the Sun came up. The view from the roof of PEARL was beautiful but not the best for measurements.
Dejian and Oleg were optimistic that the clouds would clear and they did quite quickly. We were able to measure over much of the day with PARIS-IR and the DA8. For part of the afternoon, I spelled Oleg off while he worked on other tasks.
Annemarie and Tobias worked on their data analysis and chatted with Peter C. about the work that they are doing at PEARL. The "care and feeding" instructions for UT-GBS, SPS and MAESTRO were completed today and given to Oleg, the PEARL operator who will be managing our instruments for the extended phase of the campaign.
Jim had good luck with the nitrogen liquefier. It produced over 3 litres of liquid N2 overnight. On advice from the manufacturer, they warmed up and purged the system to remove any contamination (mainly oxygen and water). We will see how it performs tomorrow.
We had Igor from the SEARCH team up to visit us. He gave Annemarie and Peter C. a little tutorial on how the SEARCH lidar works. It was neat to see the results because we could clearly see the layers of aerosols, cloud and haze that the FTSs were measuring through.
The ozonesonde was launched by Kelly and Heather at 23:15 UTC using a Raven balloon. They had another great flight. They matched their earlier record of 5.3 mbar but the altitude was slightly lower at 33.1 km. Pierre won for the second day in a row but gave a slightly less exuberant victory display than yesterday. His guess was 6.0 mbar.
Best regards,
Kaley.
