It was yet another fantastic day for sun-measurements today. While we were treated to some gorgeous lacey cirrus clouds at various times, they kept out of the way of the sun and kept the FTS folks (and Annemarie) happy and busy. As well as accumulating about 20 high resolution measurements each with the Bruker and the DA8, some PARIS resolution measurements were also made for comparison. PARIS itself accumulated a record 63 measurements from sunrise to sunset. The PEARL UT-GBS also had a successful sun observing day, aided by a large box that got it above the height of the Brewer and the railing.
A highlight of the day was speaking with two groups of students at Highland Junior High School. Kim, Mareile, Jeff, Wendy and Matt were on site with them today, teaching them about some of the research that we are doing and making spectroscopes to look at light absorption. We web-cammed into their class to answer their questions, which I think we all enjoyed, though the technology is a little less than perfect yet. Were still waiting to hear what they thought of our (fantastic) movies!
Two new faces also joined us at PEARL today. Jessa is a reporter from Up Here magazine, and seems to be enjoying seeing what were doing. Ovidiu is from the University of Sherbrooke and is here installing sun photometers at both PEARL and 0PAL.
The evenings are now staying lighter for longer, and were all making the most of the nice weather and the last few days of the campaign. A team of us headed out on a walk with the North Pole tonight, and another group cleared the ice off the water reservoir and went skating. The cold temperatures dont seem to slow anyone down!
