Bringing out the ozonesonde
Inside the polystyrene box that Mike is carrying is the instrument that actually measures the ozone. Air is sucked into the box, and chemical reactions between ozone and a solution inside it cause a current to be produced (much like a battery) that is proportional to the amount of ozone in the air. The box also has temperature, pressure and relative humidity sensors, as well as a radio transmitter to send all the data back down to the weather station as the balloon goes up.
