A day of Eureka Wildlife

Today was by far the busiest day of the campaign so far. It started in the morning with the Summit Air charter leaving Eureka at 1:30 with Pierre, Tom and Volodya on board. It was sad saying goodbye to some of the team so soon; they will be missed!

On the way up to PEARL, a young Caribou was spotted in the distance, but unfortunately there wasn't enough time to get a decent picture. Felicia took 51 MIR measurements with PARIS, Rodica took 38 MIR and 14 NIR measurements with the Bruker, and Cristen continued to test the PEARL GBS while taking measurements with the UT GBS and SAOZ. At 0PAL, Emily tested the depolarization channel with Graeme (off-site) and confirmed that the PMTs are working successfully while Zen had the MR, Agilent, and Stirling Cooler packed on board the 1:30 charter for transport back to the E-AERI's manufacturer. A lone wolf was seen hanging around the 0PAL containers for a long while after lunch - not too many jobs in the world where, when you look out the window, you see a wolf staring back...

In the afternoon, a group of us started to play frisbee golf after dinner but we cut the game short when we heard wolves howling in the distance. So, we decided to get into the trucks and head up to the airfield to check if we could see any. We ended up running into a huge pack of wolves (count of at least 19) that were around the garbage dump. They came right up to the trucks, giving us a great photo op, and even started playing around in the middle of the airstrip. Turns out that the wolves had chewed up the electrical cables connected to one of the planes on the airfield, so while we were rounding up the broken cables to be repaired we also got a tour of the cargo plane on skis, built in 1944 and used during D-Day. All in all, a very event-filled day!
