At long last the Sun is up and the weather is clear. Today has been relatively cold in Eureka, at -46 °C, but with very little wind. The temperature at PEARL was -37 °C when the team arrived, and went up to -33 °C mid-afternoon when Dan took a break to shovel snow off the roof.
Joseph and Dan had a great first day of Bruker measurements, and acquired 35 mid-infrared spectra in all 7 filters.
Debora was busy in the IR lab as well, taking 21 full-resolution measurements with PARIS. She has converted them all
into raw spectra.
In other good news, Pierre is almost finished building Xiaoyi's sun tracker dome. They plan to install the sun tracker
on the PEARL roof tomorrow.
Xiaoyi's SAOZ and UT-GBS continue to work fine, and he continues to troubleshoot issues with the PEARL-GBS.
Xiaoyi left the PEARL-GBS performing dark current measurements overnight again, and hopes it will complete them this time.
Once the Sun was up, Volodya performed a sighting (he pointed the tracker to the sun), and the SPS and MAESTRO have been
happily collecting data. Brewer 021, on the other hand, needs more attention. Dan helped Volodya bring the instrument
inside PEARL to the UV/VIS lab, where Volodya took one of the micrometers apart and cleaned it. It is moving much better now,
and tomorrow he will test it in the lab. The Sun is still too low above the horizon for normal Brewer measurements, so Volodya
aims to finish fixing and installing the Brewers in the next couple of days.
Overnight at 0PAL, 12 hours of measurements were taken in all channels of the CRL lidar. This involved no polarizer in the
depolarization channel, so it acted as an elastic channel. The preliminary data (not overlap corrected)
can be found here.
Emily ran more white light and bright sky light calibrations for the depolarization channel during the day.
Tonight she will be optimizing the rotation angle of the polarizer in the depolarization channel.
Emily plans to take CRL data overnight.
ACE ozonesonde flights begin tomorrow, February 28.
The Polar Vortex continues to be centered on the Arctic Ocean, extending to the edges of Russia, Scandinavia and Greenland.
Everyone at PEARL and 0PAL was very pleased to have a busy and productive day of measurements. Let's all hope the good weather continues!
