Over the hills and far away

Today featured a delightfully strong temperature inversion. While the temperatures in Eureka remained at -40°C, temperatures outside the Ridge Lab were a balmy -14°C. Incredible! (Relatively speaking ñ this *is* the high Arctic, after all.) A sunny day provided a welcome boost to solar measurements and morale.

In the PEARL Ridge Lab's IR lab, Joseph and Dan continued to test remote Bruker and suntracker operations. Dan took 92 MIR measurements with the Bruker, working remotely through his laptop. Joseph operated the suntracker remotely from his laptop, and continued to write a document explaining how to do this. Dan took 52 measurements with PARIS.

The UT-GBS and PEARL-GBS instruments in the UV-Vis Lab took full advantage of the wonderfully clear day. Sophie had them take measurements all day. The PEARL-GBS shutter's issue was solved remotely by Xiaoyi. Last year, he had disabled the function for shutter control in the Labview code. The shutter works properly once again.

Sophie also plotted the connection scheme of both GBSs to test the remote control of the instruments over the next few days.

Up on the Ridge Lab roof, Sophie and Paul re-leveled and re-aligned MAESTRO.

Down at 0PAL, Chris operated CRL remotely from Halifax and completed the overlap tests that had been underway for the last couple of days. Once that was complete, both UV and Visible channels in CRL began taking regular measurements again. Meanwhile, Sham joined the Purple Crow Lidar (PCL) group meeting virtually.

Today's ACE ozonesonde flight was launched at 6:15 PM (local time) and reached an altitude of 31 913 meters (7.8 hPa).

With all instruments working well, and the sun shining, the Ridge Lab team decided to take a break. Dan, Paul, Joseph, and Sophie headed north from the lab for a refreshing afternoon hike. Their route took them up, down, and over a few ridges, but it was well worth the effort. They reached a spectacular view looking out at Nansen Sound and Greely Fjord. You can see a couple photos of the view and the happy and healthy U of T contingent of the PEARL team on the CREATEArcticSci Instagram page.
