In Toronto, or in most of the world for that matter, a temperature of -27°C outside would be considered frighteningly cold. At the PEARL Ridge Lab today, we were thrilled by the relative warmth of -27°C! Temperatures in Eureka have remained near -42°C. The Ridge Lab sits at a sweet spot, 610 meters up, taking full advantage of the temperature inversion phenomenon. The Polar Vortex continues to be centered roughly above Eureka.
In the PEARL Ridge Lab's IR lab, Sebastien ran PARIS and Bruker measurements today. He took 36 MIR measurements with the Bruker and 33 with PARIS. Clouds cut off solar FTIR measurements mid-afternoon. Dan answered questions about Bruker operations, worked on website tasks, and continued work on the Bruker SOP document.
Over in PEARL's UV-Vis world, Xiaoyi's instruments were all working well. UT-GBS, PEARL-GBS, and SAOZ are operating nominally.
Paul cleared heavy frost from the SPS window today. It continues to operate well with the new macro.
The liquid nitrogen generator continues to run.
Today's ACE ozonesonde flight occurred at 6:15 pm (local time), reached an altitude of 29,707 m (8.1 hPa), and recorded temperatures as low as -78.2°C.
The team had their first sighting of muskox before dinner. There were about ten of them, but they were seen far in the distance. Nonetheless, we are certain what we saw were muskox, and not the more commonly seen "muskrocks".
